～月下の夜想曲～

King Arthur，中譯「亞瑟王」，他的統治時期被一般英國民眾視為大不列顛的黃金時代，也寫下了騎士制度的模範，問題是…他否真的存在？歷史上真的有圓桌武士這個組織嗎？其實到現在依然是個謎，下面這幾段短文是我摘錄Great Mysteries of The Past這本書中對King Arthur一些簡單的描述和評論。本書的描述手法很像小說，我個人很喜歡它的用字和敘述方式，因此會盡量將原文中較難完美翻譯的部分寫下。

一座矗立在崖邊的昏暗城堡裡，Igrayne女士正等待著她的丈夫，Gorlois，Duke of Cornwall的歸來，但出現的男人卻不是Cornwall，而是受到魔法師Merlin的幫助以Cornwall的樣貌現身的大不列顛王，Uther Pendragon。

原文：It is not he, however, who comes to her room that night but rather Uther Pendragon, king of Britain – given the appearance of Gorlois by the magician Merlin in order to satisfy the king’s illicit passion for Igrayne.

Uther Pendragon，他雖貴為王，但卻暗戀著公爵夫人Igrayne，在Merlin的幫助下，在這個晚上，他以Cornwall的外貌而有了一親芳澤的機會(Merlin這老頭也真是的…居然幫人家去偷別人的老婆…orz)。公爵夫人懷孕了，肚子裡的孩子正是名滿天下的King Arthur，亞瑟王傳說正式由這一刻展開，同時，也開啟了無數小說家和藝術家的無限想像。

Merlin同時宣布，Arthur是來自Avalon(威爾斯神話中的死者之國)的王者，傳說中的帝王，King Arthur將是史上最偉大也比任何人都更長壽的國王。在萬民跪拜並宣誓效忠的同時，大主教將王冠呈現給Arthur。

原文：Arthur is to be the best of all knights and the greatest of all kings, and he will live ”longer than any man shall ever know.” AS the people kneel to take an oath to their new sovereign, the archbishop places the crown upon his head.

在King Arthur的統治下，大不列顛享受了12年的和平，這段時間，被視為騎士制度的黃金時代(full flowering of chivalry)。在他位於Camelot的城堡，King Arthur集結了一批王國內最勇敢且忠誠的騎士，包括Launcelot、Gawain、Percivale及其它著名的騎士。在Merlin的幫助下，King Arthur設置了一張大圓桌，並在椅子上以黃金刻下騎士們的名字。這群騎士各自寫下了神話，他們擊敗惡龍、巨人和邪惡的矮人，足跡踏遍了傳聞中的鬼城、黑暗森林和被魔力控制的園地，同時也滿載榮譽回到Camelot城報告他們的冒險事跡。

原文：From Camelot the knights sally forth to fight dragons, giants, and cunning dwarfs, their encounters with the forces of evil usually taking place in haunted castles, dark forests, and enchanted gardens.

King Arthur迎娶著名的美女Guinevere為皇后，但身為圓桌騎士之首，也是眾騎士中武藝最高強也最忠誠的Launcelot卻無法壓抑內心對皇后的愛慕之情，美麗的皇后也對這位英俊的年輕騎士有著不尋常的好感。國王的外甥，Morgana le Fay之子，Mordred揭穿了這對戀人的奸情，並要求國王判決皇后必須在公眾面前被燒死。Launcelot解救了皇后並殺出重圍，帶著她逃到了法國。King Arthur在震怒之餘，決定將國家治理權交予Mordred，並親自帶兵追補這對戀人。但Mordred卻利用國王不在的期間，發動軍事政變打算奪權。King Arthur於是返回England和Mordred正式開戰，在戰爭過程中，Arthur的長矛貫穿了Mordred的身體並當場將之擊斃，但在Mordred戰死前，他也對國王造成了致命的傷害。

原文：When Launcelot is unable to resist his sinful passion for Guinevere, Arthur’s newphew Mordred, the son of Morgana le Fay, exposes the lovers and forces Arthur to condemn his wife to a public burning.

Arthur忠誠的追隨者們將他放在一條小船，通過白霧，穿過大海，將漂向Avalon，Arthur並向他忠心而哀傷的騎士們留下最後的遺言，”Comfort yourself. Be you sure that I will come again when the land of Britain has need of me.”也結束了這美麗如史詩般的傳奇故事。
